The digital visual industry
– A booming business

The Danish digital visual industry consists of digital content producing companies within games, film, television, animation and XR. The industry is a national center of excellence, which has its offspring in the two sectors Film & Media and IT. 

 

The socio-economic footprint

The digital visual industry employs approx. 13.000 people and contributes with an added value to GDP of 9,6 billion DKK. The industry’s derived effects support 12.000 jobs and an added value to GDP of 7,5 billion DKK. The calculations are made by the Danish consultancy firm Højbjerre Brauer Schultz, which distinguishes core businesses, other industries, and subcontractors. The direct effect is the sum of the core business and other industries’ economic activities. 

Core businesses consist of companies that are involved in the creation of intellectual property rights – either through ownership or as a part of the production. The core businesses employ 5.003 persons in Denmark and the core business adds value to GDP of 3,7 billion DKK annually. 

 

The other industries contribute with an additional 8.096 jobs and a value-added to GDP of 5,9 billion DKK annually.

The industry is tightly integrated with the rest of the Danish economy and its purchases from Danish subcontractors such as lawyers, accountants, hotels and restaurants generates activity which contributes with an additional 7,5 billion DKK value added to GDP yearly and supports roughly 12.000 jobs.

 

High employment growth

From 2014 to 2018 the industry’s employment increased by 21 percentage. As a comparison, the LFS-employment in Denmark increased with only 5.5 percent in the same period, which makes the digital visual industry one of the most growing sectors in the Danish economy. 

Solely for game producers, the employment rose with almost 50 percent from 2014 to 2018. The employment for interactive production companies increased in the same period with 33 percent. Hence, games and interactive companies are growing the most within the digital visual industry. 

 

A growing global market

The global market for digital content within film, games, TV, and XR is booming. The Danish digital visual industry has gotten a solid grip on the global markets and there exist even more business opportunities in gaining more terrain. As an illustration, it is expected that global demand can support 1.800 new jobs and an increase of 2.8 billion DKK in Denmark.

International sales

From 2014 to 2018 the digital visual industry experienced an increase in the part of the revenue which stems from international sales. The industry has gotten traction on the international market and especially development- and publishing of games have seen a sevenfold and threefold increase in revenue from the international market.
